MONTAUK, New York – On June 30, 2012, Montauk Brewing Company’s first keg was loaded onto a small cargo trailer attached to a seatpost of a beach cruiser by three friends who had just opened the easternmost brewery in New York. This barrel was cycled to the Harvest Restaurant just up the street and tapped out immediately for the local community to enjoy. Over the next year, the Montauk Brewing Company self-distributed to local East End accounts and slowly created a buzz around a brand that hadn’t existed before them.
In 2013 Boening Brothers Distributors protected Montauk from the rain and offered them their first home in a real beer wholesaler and immediately began working alongside the Montauk team. After an overwhelming amount of requests from the New York market, Montauk added SKI Beer as their next partner and launched in the fall of 2015 with draft only, a plan that has served them well. While there was certainly some magic behind the brand; it was simple stuff, blocking and tackling with pint glasses, coasters and walking around town with a Wave Chaser IPA tap handle in their back pocket that built on already existing momentum. In the spring of 2016, the brightly colored, nautical-themed Montauk six-packs began flying off the shelves and loyal fans proudly tagged Montauk on Instagram at a breakneck pace.
With hard work, quality beer, a great team and passionate fans; Montauk Brewing Company has become one of the top craft breweries in the country while digging deep into its home market.
On April 1 of this year, Montauk co-founders Eric Moss and Vaughan Cutillo boarded a small boat on a Friday afternoon, just as the wind and waves were picking up on the Hudson River. . In keeping with their local beginnings and entrepreneurial spirit, the first cask of Wave Chaser IPA was delivered to their first account in New Jersey by boat. Their third wholesale partner, Kohler Distributing, was waiting on the other side to welcome them to their first state outside of their home market. Montauk’s small and mighty team was also there, ready to celebrate the evening and prepare for their most exciting year yet.
